Annett Mateo believes anything can be a puppet! For over 20 years she has made all kinds of puppets out of all kinds of materials. In her career as a professional puppet designer and builder, she has built marionettes, Muppet-type puppets, rod puppets, large body/costume style, modified Banraku, shadow and pretty much every other kind of puppet. She has built custom puppets for people, theatres, and companies, both nationally and internationally, that have been in shows, parades, and television. She has attended the O’Neill Theatre conference for Puppetry a number of years and is resident puppet designer and builder for Seattle Children’s Theatre. She has performed as a member of the puppet improv group Cotton Gin at Unexpected Productions and performs regularly in slams around the region.
Annett Mateo has been an artist all her life but was sidetracked by a high tech career for 15 years as a mainframe legacy application programmer. She has been a resident of the Fremont community of Seattle for nearly 20 years. Her creative endeavors include designing, building and performing small theater puppets to giant sized festival puppets. You have seen her at many of the festivals of the region and might have also seen her at the libraries in the area performing original takes on favorite tales for the libraries summer reading programs.
Annett has been an active member of the Fremont Arts Council for many years, serving as one of its charter board members as well as participating in, and assisting organizing the variety of community arts celebrations produced throughout each year. These events include the Fremont Solstice Parade and Pageant, May Day festival, Annual Garage Sale, and Trolloween. She has also had involvement in other community festivals such the Illuminares Festival in Vancouver BC, the University Street Festival in Seattle, and the Heart of the Beast annual May Day festival in Minnesota.
